Cristiano Ronaldo raises £600,000 for Make-A-Wish Foundation

Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo may have a bit of a doubtful reputation on the pitch, though off the pitch he’s renowned for his generosity.

The Real Madrid star has a long list of donations to a number of brilliant charities. From paying for the brain surgery of a 10-year-old fan in 2010, to giving a reported £5m to help the aid effort in Nepal after the disastrous earthquake in 2015.

It was due to his above gifts that he was named as the most charitable athlete in the world in 2015. Though, it seems he is continuing his good spirit, raising a whopping £600,000 through selling one of his Ballon d’Or trophies.

Ronaldo has four of these trophies in total, and decided to donate the replica he won of the 2013 award to a London auction last weekend. All proceedings are set to go to Make-A-Wish Foundation, a charity that grants wishes to children which are challenged by life-threatening or terminal illnesses.

It is this award that means the most to him, having also won it in 2008, 2014 and 2016. The award that he was given in 2013 ultimately ended a run of four consecutive years of his rival Lionel Messi being awarded.

The donation was made at the Dorchester Hotel, with the event raising a total of £2.7m for the charity. According to reports, 22 per cent of these funds were raised by Ronaldo’s contribution.

After helping Real Madrid to their 12th Champions League title last season, Ronaldo is the heavy favourite to win his fifth at the awards ceremony in January. This will ultimately level Messi’s total of five trophies in total.
